While it seems that hunting from a tree stand is the predominant way that most hunters hunt deer, the old fashioned ways of deer hunting from the ground such as stalking through the woods still works just as well as when the Indians hunted the woods near you. Here are some tips for deer hunting from the ground.
When we think of the Indians hunting in wooded areas we think of them stalking their prey. This manner of deer hunting from the ground can be quite challenging. However, either stalking a deer that you have seen or still hunting your way through the woods looking for deer can be an effective hunting method. One of my favorite methods of hunting is to sit in a high area and glass for deer to stalk with either my bow or muzzleloader. This method of deer hunting from the ground requires that hunters learn how to move silently and to use the wind and terrain to their advantage. A good way to get practice at this is to squirrel hunt. Of course, you can also practice stalking deer without a gun year around to build skills.
Another method of hunting deer from the ground is using hunting blind. Using hunting blind involves finding fresh tracks and running down the deer that made them. Not many are fortunate enough to have enough land to hunt on to effectively track all the time but it is a lot of fun. This form of deer hunting from the ground can be a lot of fun and can also be quite frustrating as well. A fresh fallen snow can make tracking deer a lot easier and allow you to do it on a smaller scale. If you find tracks leading into a small brushy area, walk a circle around the area to see if the deer have come out. If they have not come out of the brush, you can then either track the deer, still hunt the deer, or simply wait for the deer to emerge.
